17-year old Wilfredo Leon new captain of Cuba!
Young Wilfredo Leon is assuming the captain’s responsibilities for Cuba’s 2011 FIVB Volleyball World League campaign
The team, composed by 14 players, is led by 17-year-old Wilfredo Leon, new captain of the team once again coached by veteran Orlando Samuels.
The middle-blockers include Osmany Camejo, Dariel Albo and Yasser Perdomo, opposites are Fernando Hernandez and Livan Osoria with liberos Keibel Gutierres and Yosniel Guillen. The squad is completed by outside-hitters Rolando Cepeda, Henry Bell and Dennys Hernandez and setters Yoandri Diaz, Lian Sem-Estrada and Leandro Macias.
The Cuban Federation also revealed that stellar middle-blocker and former captain Roberlany Simon requested for a rest after the intense activity of last year, while setter Raydel Hierrezuelo is out of shape due to injuries and absence during the training process.
Another player missing in the squad is outside hitter Yoandy Leal, who played at last year’s FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in Italy. He was not included in the team as he didn’t participate in the National League and had low scores in school and presence in the training camp.
Alongside with Samuels, Idalberto Valdes and Nicolas Vives will continue as the assistant coaches, with medical doctor Julio Minoso and trainer Yoan Aladro.
The team traveled to Bulgaria on Monday to complete its preparation before facing the Korea, France and Italy starting on May 28. Cuba will play abroad in all of their intercontinental round matches due to the ongoing refurbishment of Palacio de los Deportes at Ciudad Deportiva in Havana.
