2019’s most liveable cities have been announced

As far as ideal places to live in go, countries like Australia, Denmark, Sweden and Norway almost always spring to mind. With an overall positive state of living, they seem to offer it all; good education opportunities, access to free healthcare and safety from war and conflict. But for 2019, the latter two have been knocked off their long-held perch, replaced instead by cities in Japan, with Tokyo taking the crown of Most Liveable City for the year. And this ranking rejig is good news for Australians too, with three Aussie cities also listed in the most-liveable top 10. 

This revision has come as a result of the annual release of the Economist Intelligence Unit Survey, which lists the best and worst cities to live in today. Austria’s Vienna took the top spot, followed by Melbourne and Sydney. Adelaide also got a look in as the third Australian city in the top 10, coming in at the pointy end of the list. In between, cities including Osaka in Japan, Vancouver in Canada and Copenhagen in Denmark — the only Scandi city to make the cut. 

The report assesses the overall liveability of a city, looking at five main factors: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. They assign a score of ‘relative comfort’ to each city before ranking them against each other, with a score of 100 equalling a city is ideal and a score of one meaning it’s “intolerable”. Vienna scored 99.1 and Melbourne 99.8. On the other end of the spectrum, Damascus in Syria scored 30 and was placed last on the list.
