These decadent train interiors will inspire your next journey

Is there anything more charming than arriving to your destination, bag in hand, on board a luxuriously outfitted train? It calls to mind the glamour of another era, one where the journey was just as important as the destination, and travellers actually made an effort to dress up for dinner. Like cruising and road tripping, there’s also something gloriously unhurried about journeying somewhere via train, knowing that you’ve got all your luggage in a cabin with you, a comfortable bed to sleep in, and an array of bar and dining options just a short walk away.

And then, if you pick you route correctly, there’s also the added bonus of being able to gaze upon a rapidly changing landscape, your thoughts wandering as you whiz past impossibly green paddocks, fields of flowers and past shimmering blue lakes. It’s akin to being in a meditative state, and one that we can really – excuse the pun – get on board with, especially if you’re dealing with a train as luxurious and chic as the Venice-Simplon Orient Express (above).

With interiors by Wimberly Interiors, the Venice-Simplon Orient Express (operated by Belmond, above) is one of the most luxurious ways to travel in 2019. Featuring Art Deco styling, French-polished cherry wood and antique fixtures, the iconic train has been operating since 1982. Bought in 1977 by Belmond’s founder James B Sherwood after he purchased two vintage train carriages at a Monte Carlo auction, the Venice-Simplon’s carriages were carefully restored and crafted from other vintage trains, such as Le Train Bleu and the Rome Express. The original incarnation of the Orient Express was launched on 4 October 1883, and is perhaps the most famous train in the world, carrying passengers like Leo Tolstoy, Leon Trotsky, Marlene Dietrich, Lawrence of Arabia and the World War I spy Mata Hari during its time. It’s also famously featured in films like The Spy Who Loved Me and, more recently, the 2017 film Murder on the Orient Express. Now painted a stunning midnight blue, the cars currently ferry guests from London to Venice and beyond (see all the possible journeys you can take here), in grand and old-world style.
