6 new handbag brands to maximise your look at a more accessible price point
Fresh from a holiday, thoughts turn towards updating our back-to-work wardrobes – ideally with minimum purchases for maximum impact. The solution? Meet the street style set’s favourite statement bags.
While the Bottega Veneta clutch undoubtedly reigned supreme during couture week in June, there are some contemporary brands quietly rising on the scene, too. Instantly recognisable to those in the know, this new generation of It bags are effortlessly chic, and crucially, at a more accessible price point than a Hermès Birkin or Chanel 2.55. Here, shortlists six of the new-gen cult labels from fashion weeks’ street style, to inspire your September autumn/winter ’19/’20 look.
Cafuné
Hong Kong-based label Cafuné (above), the brainchild of friends Queenie Fan and Day Lau, is fast becoming known for its elegant pastel-coloured pieces. The Bellows bag (from $658) is the epitome of granny-chic, featuring a kitsch, beaded chain; while the Egg ($631) makes a smart addition to any autumn/winter ’19/’20 wardrobe.
Danse Lente
You might have spotted Danse Lente’s (slow dance in French) signature gold D-locks on the arms of fashion editors (above), doing the rounds at the autumn/winter ’19/’20 shows back in February. Founded by London-based designer Youngwon Kim, the Johnny bucket bag (from $583) is a super stylish carry-all for everyday essentials. The black version lends itself easily to workwear, while the neon versions offer a bolder, brighter mood.
Benedetta Bruzziches
If you’re looking for a bag that doubles as a piece of art, Benedetta Bruzziches is your brand. With gold sculptural handles and geometric clasps, the Italian designer’s Brigitte tote bag ($1,268) in orange is perfectly autumnal (above); or try the boxier Anais style ($1,556), which comes in six rainbow-bright shades.
Chylak

For vintage-inspired handbags, Zofia Chylak has won over fashion insiders with her modern take on timeless classics. The Polish designer trained at Proenza Schouler before setting up Chylak (above) in 2014, and has built such a reputation that there’s now a waiting list for this season’s croc-effect saddle bag (from $475) – we suggest you sign up.
LarAllan
Founded by London-based designer Lara Olutunbi in 2018, LarAllan (above) is one of the newest labels trending on the street style circuit. Its colourful boxy clutches ($932) – named The Babi, The Boomie, The Molly and The Kofo – are designed to celebrate black women and diverse femininity; and will bring joy to any outfit.
M2Malletier
M2Malletier (above), meanwhile, has been around a little longer – and have just launched a semi-bespoke service, so you can personalize your purchase. Featuring the brand’s signature metal handle, two of the most popular designs are the Amor/Fati ($2,212) and La Collectionneuse ($2,015), both slick updates on a traditional satchel.
