Tony Khan on His Recent Dynamite Segment, Cody’s Injury, Full Gear Crowd Volume, Being Hands-On w/ Talent
AEW President Tony Khan took time with members of the media on Saturday night following their Full Gear pay-per-view in Baltimore, Maryland. Here’s a breakdown of what was said:
– When asked about his voice being used on the last Dynamite in a segment with Jon Moxley, Tony again stresses that he has no intentions of becoming an on-screen character in AEW. He said it’s not a secret that he’s the President of the company, and he has final say on all things in AEW so it makes sense he would have been in on the decision to have a “lights out” unsanctioned fight. He described his involvement as simply “delivering the news”.
– Dr. Sampson checked on Cody immediately after he suffered the gash above his eye, and he made the call that the match could continue.
– On the alleged fight between Jimmy Havoc and Excalibur: “I wouldn’t call it a fight. I’ve seen a lot worse in the world of football, both in England and in the NFL. I saw a lot worse tonight. They scrapped around, but it was cool yesterday, and it’s cool today.” Tony joked that Excalibur’s win/loss record in AEW is at best, a draw.
– Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara vs. Scorpio Sky & Kazarian for the AEW Tag Team Championships confirmed for Dynamite this coming week. Hangman vs. PAC rubber match is also confirmed.
– When asked about criticism that AEW’s women’s division hasn’t had a lot of time, Tony said that he really wanted the Britt Baker/Bea Priestley to be on the main card. He has been very hands-on with that program ever since the first battle royale, and has been crafting it as a long-term thing that built into a really big deal.
– Double or Nothing will be in Las Vegas again next year, and All Out will continue to be in Chicago as well. Those seem like the annual destinations going forward.
– With regards to being hands-on with certain talents, Tony talks about having been a fan of so many of the AEW talents for years and years. Singles out Trent as someone he’s been a huge fan of and when they signed him, he went to him directly and told Trent that he was someone he believed in, and he wanted him in AEW. And they’ve put him in a position to succeed, and they’ve got the Best Friends over with the fans.
– MJF being involved in Cody losing to Chris Jericho does not effect the deal that Cody made never to challenge for the AEW World title if he lost. The ruling stands.
– Rock ‘n’ Roll Express coming in to do the segments with Santana & Ortiz was “100%” a Young Bucks idea. Says that RnR are two of their idols and wanted to work with them again.

– “We’ll definitely keep hearing from Tully”. Tony says we’ll be seeing a lot more of Blanchard going forward and possibly doing promos on Dynamite. He’s in it for the long-term, at least for now.
– Tony clarified the recent Twitter photo where he said there’s no monitors with USA Network on backstage, and then a photo surfaced of NXT on in the production truck. Tony said he’s in Gorilla position during the shows, so it’s possible they could have it on in the truck. All he knows is he doesn’t have it on in Gorilla and backstage while the show is live.
– It was mentioned that the crowd on TV was really quiet all night, but everyone in the arena said it was super loud all night long. Tony said he was behind the curtain and it sounded very loud all night long, but he’ll have to go back and watch the show and see what happened. If there’s a problem they’ll look at the acoustics and do something differently the next time they come through town and run the venue. The TV tapings have all been ridiculously hot crowds.
