According to Tokyo Sports the 28-year-old joshi style will be finishing up with the Stardom promotion in Japan on June 17th. She recently dropped the Wonder of Stardom Championship to Momo Watanabe this past week, but according to Dave Meltzer at F4WOnline.com, the decision to take the title off her had nothing to do with her leaving the company, as they weren’t aware of her plans until well after the change had taken place.
Io made her pro wrestling debut at just 16-years-old and worked as a freelancer for promotions all around Japan, alongside her older sister Mio. For multiple years the sisters actually worked with WWE Superstar Asuka (then known as Kana) in a stable known as Triple Tails. She is best known for her work in Stardom over the last 7 years where she won more than a dozen championships and has been consistently considered one of the top three stars in the company.
Both Io and Kairi Sane (fka Kairi Hojo) were slated to be a part of the original Mae Young Classic, but WWE opted not to sign Shirai at the time due to the results of a medical evaluation. It was reported that WWE doctors found some kind of heart-related issue, on top of all the problems she’s had with her neck over the years, but apparently that’s no longer a factor.
While Io ultimately returned to Japan and continued working for Stardom, she expressed multiple times that it was still her goal to make it to WWE one day, and has listed Charlotte Flair as her dream opponent. It was even reported that she turned down a spot in the recent Ring of Honor tournament to crown the first WOH World Champion, because she was worried it would effect her chances of signing with WWE in the near future.
