Laurent Blanc speaks on Jérôme Boateng domestic abuse accusations

Following Lyon’s 1-0 win over Lille on Sunday evening, Laurent Blanc was asked about the domestic abuse accusations levied against centre back Jérôme Boateng concerning the context surrounding the suicide of his ex-girlfriend, as transcribed by L’Équipe.

Have you spoken with him about the off-pitch matters?

No. It shouldn’t be a priority to discuss everyday. I discuss a lot with him in terms of playing football. He is one of the experienced players in defense. Do not forget that we play with young players (Gusto, Lukeba, Diomandé). We need a little bottle behind. He can have others, but Jérôme (Boateng) is legitimate in this role. He has experienced many things in football.

The German appeared at a tribunal in Munich last week, for an appeal over a previous sentence to pay another ex-girlfriend €1.8m in damages, consisting of 60 daily payments of €30,000 each, for domestic abuse during a 2018 holiday.

A German investigation claims that he allegedly forced his girlfriend to sign a non-disclosure agreement, only weeks before her suicide in 2021.
