PSG ultras defy ban on away fans by offering tickets to Lens supporters

The CUP, Paris Saint-Germain’s grouping of ultras, has announced that it would offer 80 seats to Lens fans, who are banned from travelling to tonight’s fixture between the two teams.

A local police decree issued last week had banned Sang et Or fans from attending the game, while a ministerial decree issued on Friday banned Lens supporters from travelling into the Paris region altogether.

The reasons given for the former announcement included the second round of the French presidential election tomorrow, a rugby match at the same time, and the risk of clashes between the two sets of fans.

The CUP’s statement has indicated that they would offer seats to their Lens counterparts as a show of unity, and disproving the violent clashes that were feared. They have also welcomed Lens’ own statement last week which criticised the increasing number and “normalisation” of local decrees banning away support across Ligue 1 stadiums.

PSG host Lens tonight in what is expected to be the title-winning match, with just 1 point needed to put it beyond second-placed Marseille’s reach. However, the CUP has indicated that they would be continuing their protest at the club’s upper management and team by leaving at the 75th minute to celebrate the title outside the stadium, should they be in a winning position at that point.
