WATCH: Brumbies winger ALMOST misses out on a try while chatting to the assistant referee

Brumbies speedster Andy Muirhead was almost caught out by his own teammate in one of the most bizarre tries we have seen in his side’s 31-25 win in Sydney.

The visitors were awarded a penalty five metres out from the Waratahs’ line and whilst the hosts engaged in discussion with the referee most of their players standing around.

Scrum-half Ryan Lonergan launched a cross kick out to right wing Muirhead, who initially knew nothing about it as he was having a good catch-up with the assistant referee. The speedster only realised the ball was coming his way as it bounced metres in front of him. He caught it and waltzed over unopposed with the Waratahs nowhere.

There is a reason high school rugby coaches will always say, ‘do not give your back to the opposition when they have a penalty’.

Lonergan started the game strongly, crashing over in the seventh minute thanks to a scything run from the elusive Tom Wright, and the star would convert his own try.

The Waratahs responded well as teenage debutant Max Jorgensen had a dream start to his career as he managed to wriggle away from three defenders to score under the posts in the 15th minute. Tane Edmed was on hand to add the extras before kicking a penalty seven minutes later.

Lonergan cancelled out Edmed’s penalty with one of his own before the seesaw swing back in the Brumbies’ favour as Muirhead went over for his strange try just before the break. However, this time the scrum-half did not convert the extras securing a 15-10 lead at the break for the Brumbies.

The visitors would draw blood first in the second period as Lonergan added two penalties from the tee in the 43rd and 46th minutes.

Momentum swung yet again as prodigy Jorgensen completed his brace in the 50th minute, with Edmed nailing the hick from the left-hand touchline.

Typical to this clash, the Brumbies responded almost immediately as the very rapid Corey Tooley got in on the try-scoring action in the 59th minute, with substitute Noah Lolesio getting his first conversion of the season.

Just two minutes later, a rampant move down the left from the Waratahs would see scrum-half Jake Gordon played in for a try in the 61st minute, with Edmed missing from the tee on this occasion.

Lolesio kicked a penalty in the 75th minute to take the Brumbies’ lead beyond seven before Edmed kicked a consultation three-pointer with the clock in the red to earn his side a losing bonus point.

It was a truly brilliant start to Super Rugby Pacific in Australia.
