Keep It Together
“Backcombing or teasing creates a ‘pad’ for the accessory to be secured to. Most good quality accessories will have a clip attached or eyelets to bobby-pin yourself. Make sure you use a section with a good amount of hair to support the accessory, to ensure it won’t slip out. I always secure with at least three bobby pins by looping through a part of the accessory and securing into the padded section of hair underneath. As for hats, most will have a headband or eyelets to secure. Always crisscross two bobby pins over the headband arms just behind the ear into a padded section. Then add more hair over the top and spray with a high-hold hairspray to secure.”

Hat Trick
“Always put the majority or all of the hair up if you’re wearing a hat, as wearing it down can feel more casual. And ensure your bun or chignon is on the opposite side to where you’re placing the hat. For example, if the hat sits slightly to the left side of the head, secure a low bun to the right of the head. For a hat in the middle, keep the bun central: this ensures the style is balanced and in proportion.”

A Collaborative Approach

“Use reference or inspiration photos to show your stylist before choosing a hair accessory. Generally, if you’re wearing something with a high neckline, the hair should be high, too. Your stylist will know the general principles and be able to help with choosing the correct style. If you’re blonde, dainty or fine accessories can go unnoticed. Some of the best accessories for blondes are diamantés, pearls, lace, fabrics, hats and contrasting colours. Brunettes, on the other hand, suit most types of hair accessories; even the smallest adornment will stand out. Hats, coloured beads, feathers, gold and silver are fantastic on brunettes. As for redheads, rose gold is a winner.”
Viktoria Novak pearl headbands, from $660.
Rain, Hail or Shine
“It’s all about prep and what products you use to set the hair. Be sure to use a good quality volumiser or thickening spray, as you are directionally drying your hair, which gives internal hold and support. Add a humidity protector if you’re prone to fly-aways, which will keep your style smooth and shiny all day long. Always finish with a good quality high-hold hairspray and ensure your bobby pins are secure by shaking your head a little before you head out.”

Rule of Thumb
“Hair always goes up easier when it’s not freshly washed and slippery, so aim to wash your hair the day before race day. Dry shampoo and texture sprays are a must for up-dos, as they create pliability and volume. When it comes to choosing the perfect accessory, halos and barrettes suit hair that’s out. Half up, half down style suit brooches, headbands and side clips with fine detailing.
Up-styles, on the other hand, work well with hats, large architectural headbands, all types of clips and fascinators.”
