The celebrity pink hair inspiration you didn’t know you needed

Dying your hair pink is a sure-fire way to transform your look — and it’s been a popular movie trope over the years. Think of Frenchie, played by Didi Conn, accidentally going pink in (1978); Scarlett Johansson’s Charlotte in a bubblegum wig in (2003); and Natalie Portman sporting a similarly striking bob as stripper Alice in (2004).

Depending on which shade you opt for, pink hair can give off all sorts of meanings. A rose tint conveys a sense of fun femininity — see Sienna Miller circa 2013 or Kate Hudson in 2014. Meanwhile, a shocking pink combined with a punky cut is an act of rebellion; Cyndi Lauper in the 1980s, Gwen Stefani in the 1990s and Katy Perry in 2010s being the ultimate poster girls. More recently, however, millennial pink has become a cool-girl signature, with the likes of Cara Delevingne, Kristen Stewart, Maisie Williams and Hunter Schafer all sporting the look.

For men, going pink has the power to subvert traditional notions of masculinity. Jaden Smith unveiled his candyfloss buzzcut at a Louis Vuitton party in June 2019, following in the footsteps of Frank Ocean, who first debuted the look in 2017. Here, picks out the best celebrity pink hair looks of all time.
