Black Panther's Oscar Wins Made History

Yes, in this latest edition we have news about Marvel's big wins, Netflix's one big loss, and the dedication Carrie Fisher probably could've done without. Stick with us, kid—we promise you'll be as shocked as Olivia Colman winning an Academy Award.

Black Panther Scores Multiple Oscars

Last night, Black Panther won three Oscars—the first Academy Awards ever for Marvel Studios. But it was the first two that the film picked up that were truly historic. Ruth Carter won for Best Costume Design, becoming the first African American woman to win in the category. She was quickly followed by Hannah Beachler, who won for Best Production Design. Beachler was not only the first woman of color to win in that category, she was also the first to be nominated.

Carrie Fisher Probably Didn't Want That Dedication

The biggest shock of last night's Oscars telecast came at the end, when Green Book overcame many controversies to win Best Picture. Then, almost as surprising as the movie's win, was that the speech ended with producer Charles Wessler dedicating the award "to our great friend, Carrie Fisher." Now, it's true that Wessler and Fisher were friends, but did she want this particular Oscar dedicated to her? Twitter didn't seem to think so. (Well, Mark Hamill was cool with it.)

Netflix Doesn't Have a Best Picture—But It Got a Lot of Thanks

So by now you've put together that Roma—and, by extension, Netflix—didn't win Best Picture. That's too bad, but seeing as Roma was the work of one of the best directors in the business, Alfonso Cuarón, and given the juggernaut that is Netflix, chances are both parties will have another opportunity. The movie did, however, take home three Oscars last night for Cinematography, Directing, and Foreign Language Film, and Netflix was heaped with praise for each one. The streaming service's other big win of the night? Dropping a trailer for The Irishman, Martin Scorsese's next movie, which features a Murderers' Row of talent and will likely be Netflix's next attempt at Oscar gold.
