Jean-Claude Juncker will go down in history as the man who succeeded in keeping Greece in the European Union but failed to prevent Britain voting to leave in the Brexit referendum.

The president of the European Commission retires at the end of today in Brussels, after decades enmeshed in the machinations of EU politics and five tumultuous years in office buffeted by crisis after crisis.
