The Queen’s rumoured favourite event, the Royal Ascot racing carnival, is underway with its first day for 2019 taking place on Tuesday June 18. And while the races themselves were surely a high point for racegoers and punting enthusiasts, it was the fashions on the field that were the real highlight of the first day of the royally-approved event.

As we recently reported, the event has a strict 36-page dress code, with non-negotiable guidelines for approved attire to wear to each of the different enclosures. But, while skirt length, hat size and even jumpsuits are addressed in the guidelines, which colourway you wear is entirely your choice.

On day one of Royal Ascot this year the trending colour was blue. Kate Middleton, 37, led the Royal Ascot blue brigade in a dazzling custom powder blue Elie Saab dress with a pussy bow neck and embroidered tulle skirt based on a look from their resort 2019 collection.

The duchess paired the stunning dress with a matching powder blue Philip Treacy hat, silver Gianvito Rossi pumps, silver clutch and Kiki McDonough blue topaz and diamond drop earrings. The 37-year-old mother-of-three’s Royal Ascot nod to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana, came by way of her sapphire and diamond engagement ring. The ring was Princess Diana’s engagement ring and it was passed onto Prince William, who gave it to his now-wife on their engagement.

Her Majesty was also in powder blue at Royal Ascot on day one, donning a blue coat dress, matching hat and white gloves. Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie also followed the unofficial blue dress code, Princess Beatrice was in an almost identical shade of blue to both The Queen and Kate Middleton, while Princess Eugenie’s sleeveless blue midi dress was more of a teal colour.
