Influencer Camila Coelho on her new fashion label and how to take Insta-perfect photos

If there’s one thing beauty and fashion influencer Camila Coelho knows it’s the Instagram-potential of a look. Whether it’s an outfit or a make-up moment, this mega influencer who boasts 7.9 million followers on Instagram and over four million subscribers on her two YouTube channels, has the skills and expertise to call it.
So when a press release crossed the Vogue desk that the Brazilian-born influencer was launching an eponymous fashion label, Camila Coelho Collection, it was always going to be a move fashion and Instagram alike, would love.
The 60-piece collection speaks directly to the social media set with bright prints and cute, colourful day-to-night resortwear — think: midriff-baring tops, off-the-shoulder mini-dresses and playsuits — basically everything that says “‘Gram me”.
Speaking to Vogue Australia ahead of the launch of the collection, which drops today exclusively on Revolve, the influencer-cum-designer says designing a fashion brand is a dream come true and was inspired by her vibrant home country of Brazil.
“Creating my own brand has been a dream of mine for years now and I’m so happy to have it live on such a strong e-commerce platform like Revolve. I’ve been working with them for years and they are like family to me, so I couldn’t be happier. Brazil was definitely a big inspiration for the first collection. Since we are launching in summer I wanted to bring in bright colors, and prints that remind me of my home country.”

Coelho, who says her off-duty style runs to “comfortable clothes” calling on “high-waisted fitness pants, sports bra and a cozy hoodie on top if it’s colder” as her go-to outfit when at home and “denim pants with a blazer for going out”, loves every piece in her new collection but does have a standout she can’t wait to see on customers, presumably on social media. “I am really excited to see people wearing the linen mint pieces.”

This excitement in seeing the mint pieces out in the wilds of the social media style community in some ways explains why Coelho has become such a huge global influencer. She is truly engaged in social media as an authentic content creator and consumer of content, staying true to her brand and audience, rather than always thinking in dollar terms.
“Work with brands you truly love and build real and organic long term relationships (instead of working with everyone),” Coelho says, adding that she has turned down offers from brands in the past if they don’t connect with her and her audience. “I’ve always believed that in order for me to grow and earn the respect from my followers, I needed to only advertise brands/products that I truly believe in (and tested before). We’ve turned down so many offers in the past, even early in my career.”
Of course, no conversation with the Brazilian-born influencer would be complete without some advice on taking a picture perfect Instagram snap. Coelho — who says she likes to give herself “about one-and-a-half-to-two hours” to get ready before shooting content — advises the following: “For a great photo, always look for good natural lighting and pay attention to backgrounds. Look at the photo as a whole and not just yourself.”
