Great victories for Maaseik and Panathinaikos

Maaseik and Panathinaikos will certainly celebrate a "white" Xmas. Both teams surprised Italian favorites. While Macerata lost in Maaseik, Piacenza could not beat Panathinaikos.

 

 

It was definitely not a night to be associated to sweet memories for the Italian teams as both Lube Banca Marche MACERATA and CoprAtlantide PIACENZA did not finish their mission as they certainly had wished.

Noliko MAASEIK caused big sensation as the Belgians defeated in a crazy five setter the Italians pre-favorites of Lube Banca Marche MACERATA. Local hero Brecht Van Kerckhove: "We slowed down after the first two sets but with the great help of the audience we finally reached an unexpected result”.

A second Italian team, namely CoprAtlantide PIACENZA, suffered a major upset in Pool E as the guys of coach Lorenzetti struggled against Panathinaikos ATHENS for a final 1:3. Panathinaikos coach Stelios Kazazis said: "This is a great victory against a great opponent. It was a great effort for all of us. We managed to read the minds of the two setters so we stopped their attacks. This is just a victory. We will celebrate but tomorrow we have to prepare for the game against E.A. PATRON in the national league”.

CSKA SOFIA also delighted quite an impressive home crowd maintaining their nerves fully under control in a tricky tie-break with the Unicaja ALMERIA. It was the second five-setter in less than seven days for CSKA after the Bulgarians had outclassed with a similar score TOURS VB of France. The head coach of CSKA SOFIA, Aleksander Popov, was more than happy: “Thanks to my players, the fans and all the people here at the Arena Samokov. Our game was not the best, but we eventually got the victory and that’s all that counts”.
