Three Mavericks Secure First Place Finishes at Augsburg Open

Minneapolis, Minn- Three Mavericks finished in first place at the Augsburg Open Saturday while 17 in total placed for Minnesota State.

Adam Cooling (Sr., 174 lbs.) was able to defend his title from last year’s tournament going 4-0 on the day. Cooling wrestled his way to the championship picking up wins over Nick Esping (Southwest Minnesota State) by 21-8 major decision, a 19-8 major decision against Teddy Erickson (St. Johns), and a 7-3 decision against Richard Carlson (Lacrosse). Cooling pinned Austin Boniface (Augsburg) at the 2:55 mark in the final earning himself first place while improving to 7-1 on the season.

Matthew Blome (Fr., 184 lbs.)(Unattached) continued his success as a Maverick taking first place at the Gold 184 weight class. Raising his mark on the season to 10-1, Blome racked up three falls on the day including one in the first place match against Owen Webster (Augsburg) in 3:55.

Darick Vancura (Sr., 197 lbs.) and Chaydon O’Fallon (Jr., 197 lbs.) finished in first and second at the Gold 197 weight class. Vancura reached the final with consecutive falls over Nick Wise (William Penn) and Matthew Chlebek (Luther), while O’Fallon had a sudden victory decision against Jackson Ryan (Southwest Minnesota State) in his build up to the final.

Logan Saltou (Fr., 149 lbs.) (Unattached) and Derek Herman (Fr., 174 lbs.) (Unattached) both took home second place finishes for Minnesota State. Louie Sanders (R-Fr., 141 lbs.)­­ and Tanner Mills (Fr., 141 lbs.) faced off against one another in the 3rd place match at the Gold 141 weight class. Sanders had the edge winning by a 7-4 decision.

Other Mavericks placing at the Augsburg open included Paul Selman (So., 133 lbs.) fourth, Tanner Day (Fr., 141 lbs.) (Unattached) fifth, Daniel Close (So., 149 lbs.) fourth, Dylan Herman (Jr. 157 lbs.) fifth, Neil Clement (Fr., 157 lbs.) (Unattached) third, Etienne Kinney (Fr., 157 lbs.) (Unattached) fourth, Gage Thom (R-Fr., 184 lbs.) sixth, Corey Abernathy (Jr., 184 lbs.) fourth, and Chris Zimmer (Jr., 285 lbs.) fourth.

The Mavericks will next travel to Kenosha, Wis on December 3 to take part in the Wisconsin Open.
