Careening up the winding hills to Mount Lofty House provides some of the best views Australia has to offer. This 167-year-old hotel is perched at the top of South Australia’s Adelaide Hills and burrowed into the valley. Originally built in 1852 by British-born businessman Arthur Hardy upon his relocation to Australia, the historic mansion was originally his summer house, but is now a five-star hotel. Earlier this year, the hotel completed a $6 million refurbishment spanning its 32 guest rooms, restaurant and bar, making it one of Adelaide’s most luxurious residences.

Arriving at the foot of the hotel, a sprawling brick mansion awaits, overlooking the Piccadilly Valley and Adelaide Hills wine region below. Inside, the interiors greet you like a manor house, as you bypass a mahogany balustrade on the left and an intimate bar with a roaring fireplace on the right. Upon check in, indulge in a glass of bubbles and one of the hotel’s famous chocolate chip cookies, then it’s time to settle in and enjoy the serenity of your room, which also has that enviable vista of the rolling valleys below.

Mount Lofty house is set across 30 acres in the the Adelaide Hills wine region.

It doesn’t matter where you stand on the well-curated grounds, the valley views span 360 degrees.

Mount Lofty House is home to a pool for summer trips and also the Stables Day Spa offering luxurious treatments to help you unwind during your stay. The treatment rooms are aptly named as they’re housed in the original stables building. Choose from rejuvenating facials to exquisite massages and leave feeling completely anew.

The design of the rooms match the manor-house feel of the rest of the hotel. The rooms feature rich green textiles offset with floral accents and that same mahogany timber throughout.

At Mount Lofty house, you can opt for a classic room or a luxury suite, to give you extra space. There is also a range of cottages that fit up to 10 people, perfect for group travellers.

You’ll also find those delicious choc chip cookies on your bed upon checking in, too!

Here, the Conservatory Suite, which features a large master bedroom and a private balcony.

The bathrooms are modern and feature Appelles amenities.

There are a range of dining options, too. No stay is complete without eating at the hotel’s three-hatted restaurant, Hardy’s Verandah, where you can munch on a seasonally crafted menu by executive chef Jin Choi.

The main calling card of Hardy’s Verandah is its mouthwatering degustation menu, which has twists and turns in every (delicious) dish.

Situated underneath Hardy’s Verandah is the hotel founder, Arthur Hardy’s original cellar, where you can embark on a wine tasting to select the matched wines ahead of your dinner booking.

The Arthur Waterhouse lounge is the other dining option, featuring a standout cocktail offering and a more relaxed menu. There’s also the option of ordering to your room.

The hotel is also currently developing a range of luxury suites which will be a separate hotel called Sequoia, sitting adjacent to Mount Lofty House. At the moment, Sequoia is slated to open by the end of the year.
