Through the Lens: Giving Back (Ep. 5)

July 19, 2020 Off By HotelSalesCareers

In the fifth episode of Minnesota Wrestling: Through the Lens, titled “Giving Back,” Gopher wrestlers head out to do some holiday shopping, but they’re not buying gifts for parents, siblings or friends. Each year, a donor to the Gopher Wrestling program gives money specifically for wrestlers to go out and shop for those in need and personally drop off the donated items at a local charity.

“We want to learn what it’s like to give,” said senior Scott Schiller, who organized this year’s effort. “This donor wants us to understand what it means to give to people and how it affects them.”

Schiller, a two-time All-American and currently the No. 2 nationally ranked wrestler at 197, researched local charities and chose People Serving People to receive this year’s donations. The organization is the largest and most comprehensive, family-focused shelter in Minnesota, offering a broad range of on-site programs and services to assist homeless families.

“It’s great to be able to give like that,” said Schiller. “It gives you a lasting impression of why you should give and the great things that you can do when you do give to people.”
