17 stunning desert oasis hotels in the middle of nowhere

When you think ‘holiday’ the word ‘desert’ doesn’t immediately come to mind. In such a game of word association, Australians would normally say something like ‘Bali or ‘ski’. Maybe even ‘dessert’ (the extra ‘s’ makes all the difference). But thanks to our recent story on drone photography, we’ve been introduced to desert oasis hotels. And we like them.

The health benefits of a holiday in warm weather are many – escaping a cold, humid climate and touching down in a hot, dry one can ease asthma and arthritis. The sunshine of a desert climate can give you a vitamin D boost, which helps with a range of ailments from low bone density to Seasonal Affective Disorder (aptly acronym-ed SAD).

But more than health benefits, it’s the strange exoticness of a desert holiday that appeals. For example, Palacio de Sal (Palace of Salt) in Bolivia is perched on the edge of the world’s largest salt flat. (If you have intrepid friends who’ve been there, they no doubt returned with surreal photos of the white expanse and flamingoes who breed there.)

The Palacio is a hotel made from one million salt blocks – its walls, ceilings and furniture are all sodium chloride. And the owners don’t need to worry about rain melting their property, because the area receives virtually no precipitation. (Desert, as we said.) However, don’t even think about licking the walls. That is strictly prohibition for hygiene and dissolving-the-hotel reasons.
