The third season of Stranger Things delivered all the drama, twists, turns, and supernatural terror the Duffer brothers promised. But now that it’s over, fans are left wanting more. And we’re here to update you on all you need to know about the hotly-anticipated fourth season of the hit series.

When will it air? What plot will it follow? Which cast members will return to Hawkins for the next instalment? We have all the answers for you, and more. Scroll on to brush up on everything there is to know, and be sure to check back as we continue to update this story as the production of the fourth season of Stranger Things gets underway.

Thankfully, Stranger Things creators Ross and Matt Duffer have confirmed that yes, a fourth season is on the cards. “Season four is definitely happening,” they said in an interview with Collider in 2018. The show’s creators have since teased what fans can expect from the next instalment.

“We have the big broad strokes. It’s just now about filling in those lines in the details,” the Duffer brothers recently told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re pretty excited about where it’s potentially going to go. Again, like we said, it’s going to feel very different than this [the third] season.”

Given that the final episode of season three saw three characters lose their lives, it’s likely the cast list will change come season four. As Billy, played by Dacre Montgomery, sacrificed himself to the Mind Flayer in an effort to save Eleven, and Soviet scientist Dr Alexei met his fate at the Hawkins 4th of July fun fair, these two characters will likely not return. Hopper, played by David Harbour, also appeared to die in the season finale. However, given the reference to the “American” in the post-credit scene, we are quietly hoping all is not as it seems.

As far as we know, fans can expect to see the return of the remaining cast, including Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Finn Wolfhard as Mike, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas, Sadie Sink as Max, Noah Schnapp as Will, Natalia Dyer as Nancy, Joe Keery as Steve, Maya Hawke as Robin, and Winona Ryder as Joyce.

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly how the fourth instalment of Stranger Things will pan out, however, given that a number of characters died in season three, and Joyce Byers left Hawkins with Will and Eleven, there are a number of ways it could go. On top of that, the finale of the third season suggested fans haven’t seen the last of the Soviet lab in Kamchatka.

Unfortunately, an official release date for the fourth season of Stranger Things is yet to be revealed. However, given that the break between the last two seasons was approximately eight months, it’s highly likely it won’t air until next year.
