A few things:
The Wedduh: Forecast to rain all day, at 9:00 am by the rain sodden grounds of the host Endicott Estate in Dedham, the forecast looked accurate with steady precip…but then by doppler account and in actuality, the area remained in a dry bubble as bands of rain to either side moved north.
F40: July/August NER Cover subject Ginger Reiner of Craft Concept could not defend her F40 10K nat’l title but ran nonetheless, placing 5th. “It’s my Achilles,” sighed Reiner, accompanied by her two kids at the finish line. “I shouldn’t have run New Bedford and today, well this is one of my favorite races.”
California’s Jen Bayliss, 47, won the title in 37:19 (6:07 pace) with Middletown, RI’s Karolyn Bowley, 48, in 2nd at 38:02.
Whirlaway’s Jan Holmquist, 73, ran 50:29 to place as the top age-graded female at 93.37. Teammate Karen Durante, 67, who before the race stated, “I just want to hit 90%” ran 46:37, to rank 3rd age-graded at 92.10% behind NY’s Marisa Sutera Strange, 54, in 38:54 for 92.50%.
M70: Does it get more ultra competitive than this: our own Bill Dixon, 70, of Brattleboro, VT and the Greater Lowell RR, runs under the Nat’l US M70 record in 39:43 (6:24 pace) but places 2nd to Gene Dykes, 70, of the Greater Philadelphia TC, in 39:04 (6:18 pace).

—-Dykes ran 3:16:20 at waterlogged Boston but just previous to that ran 2:57:43 in Rotterdam to become the 2nd M70 to break sub-3 following the late, great Ed Whitlock.
Open: The BAA’s Brian Harvey became the 1st male to win 4 Rambles. Harvey won last year a week after running Boston and won this year in 30:49.
“I love this race but this year was a lot better. It was perfect running weather and my legs were a lot fresher. I was sub-4:50 for the mile and I was out front to stay.”
The defending women’s champion, 2017 NER Female Runner of the Year, and recent New Bedford Half Marathon champion Holly Rees, 24, of the Battle Road TC, was as dominant in the women’s division as Harvey in the men’s, winning easily in 34:18.
There was live music post-race and Jack Abbey’s Brewery proved as accommodating as the weather. Ramble on!
