A New Orleans guesthouse full of artful details
The grand entrance of Maison de la Luz.
Interior designer to the stars, Pamela Shamshiri, wowed Vogue Living last year with her restoration of a Modernist home in Los Angeles. She purchased the house, designed by architect RM Schindler, for her family and immediately began repairs – it had been subjected to some terrible renovations in the 1980’s. “I mean, there were 17 layers of paint that we stripped,” says Shamshiri. “The home had lost its spirit.” But in her capable hands that spirit was well and truly revived.

Shamshiri, who counts Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and musician Beck as clients, has been keeping herself busy. She has just put the finishing touches on Maison de la Luz , a six-story guesthouse in the vibrant Arts Warehouse district of New Orleans – which is right near Lafayette Square, one of the oldest parks in the city. The project was a collaboration between Shamshiri Studio and Atelier Ace.
New Orleans-sourced antiques and original works by local artists decorate guest-only common rooms.
Shamshiri has filled the grand old residence with thoughtful modern details. In collaboration with Christopher Farr, she designed contemporary rugs for the rooms. The walls feature original works by local Louisiana artists. Sculptural snake shower handles add wow-factor to generously proportioned bathrooms.

Historic iron staircase banisters were preserved during the refurbishment.
Shamshiri was also conscious of the historic nature of the building and chose to preserve details like wrought-iron staircase bannisters. The exterior is also unmistakably characteristic of the area.
Bathrooms feature marble vanities, sculptural snake shower handles and refined custom tile work.
Bathrooms are of lavish proportions, with generous marble vanities and intricate tile work meticiously laid by skilful craftsmen.
Beds feature hand-embroidered linens.
Devoted to preserving New Orleans’ legendary hospitality and understated elegance, the Maison de la Luz guesthouse comes with a concierge who knows all the best haunts in this cultural capital – as well as a bar next-door with a serious pedigree.

Bar Marilou is the first venue that acclaimed French hospitality group Quixotic Projects have opened in the US. Famed for their Parisian establishments Candelaria, Le Mary Celeste, Les Grand Verres and Hero, they want Bar Marilou to combine stylish European aperitif culture with spirited Caribbean warmth. Located in the former City Hall’s library, the bar is at once high end and mischievous, colourful and chic.
