Augustana Wraps Up Super Regional V Championships

Vikings send two wrestlers to nationals

MOORHEAD, MINN. — An exciting day of wrestling at the NCAA Super Regional V Championships on the campus of MSU Moorhead saw the Augustana wrestling team take fifth place with 61 points while two individuals qualified for the national tournament on March 8-9.

Colin Ayers and No. 8 Clayton Wahlstrom qualified for nationals for the Vikings after winning the consolation finals. Ayers took third place and went 3-1 on the day at 157 lbs. At 197 lbs. Wahlstrom also finished at 3-1 for a third place appearance.

Lukas Poloncic made the consolation finals, but fell to U-Mary’s Phillip Springsteen. Poloncic finished the day with a 3-2 record at 174 lbs. and recovered from a second round defeat after a bye to make a push through wrestle-backs before falling just short of a nationals appearance.

Keaton Schorr and Tyler Wagener also saw a lot of action during Saturday’s tournament, with each finding their way to the consolation semifinals. Schorr finished in sixth place with a 2-3 record on the day. Wagener placed fifth with a 3-2 showing. Wagener’s first four matches were all decided by fall, while the fifth place match was decided by injury default, giving Wagener the win.

The day started with a bang for the Vikings as Brayden Curry won by fall at the 4:22 mark over Seth Hutchison of SMSU at 133 lbs. in one of the first matches of the day. Schorr kept the energy level high with a 15-5 major decision at 141 lbs. over U-Mary’s Hunter Eckert in the first round.

Wrapping up first round action for the Vikings was a 2-0 win by Matt Naig over SMSU’s Andrew Peterson.

In the second round, Schorr turned a third period takedown into a fall within seconds, defeating Wisconsin-Parkside’s Nathan Smith at the 6:11 mark. Wahlstrom won his first match against Minnesota State’s Dylan Butts in an 8-4 decision.

Curry was able to grab one more win on the day with a 5-0 decision in the consolation bracket over Brock Buysse.

Overall, the Vikings recorded four pins, one tech fall, and one major decision on the day.

2019 NCAA Division II Northern Regional Qualifier Results

The next stop for the qualified Vikings is the NCAA Division II National Tournament that takes place on March 8-9 in Cleveland, Ohio.
