Baby Born To Woman In Vegetative State; Phoenix PD Investigating
PHOENIX, AZ — A police investigation is underway after a woman at a Phoenix nursing facility who has been in a vegetative state following a near drowning reportedly became pregnant and gave birth.
The allegations came to light in a news report from AZ Family. According to the report, the female patient who has been in a vegetative state for at least a decade gave birth on Dec. 29. Citing sources, the publication reported that the staff was not aware the woman was pregnant until she was giving birth.
A spokesman for Phoenix Police told Patch in an email that the matter is under investigation by police.

The baby is alive and healthy, AZ Family reported.
Hacienda HealthCare and the Arizona Department of Health Services did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In a statement to AZ Family, a Hacienda HealthCare spokesperson said the organization will continue to cooperate fully with law enforcement and all relevant agencies regarding this matter.
The state Department of Economic Security, a social-service agency whose functions include serving disabled people, said it performed health and safety checks on all of the residents at the Hacienda facility after the birth was reported and was working with police on their investigation.
