ARLINGTON, VA — A veterinary team from the Animal Welfare League of Arlington performed emergency surgery Sunday to remove an arrow from the head of a young orange tabby cat that had been turned into a West Virginia animal rescue, according to a post on AWLA’s Facebook page.

The West Virginia rescue contacted AWLA on Friday, Feb. 14 — Valentine’s Day — about a young cat they had just taken in that had been shot in the head with arrow. The rescue had rushed it to a West Virginia hospital, where the cat received pain medication. The veterinarian at the hospital estimated the arrow had been in the cat’s head for at least a week. Because the rescue was not financially able to pay for surgery to remove the arrow, it reached out to AWLA for assistance.

The cat was transported on Saturday, Feb. 15, to the Arlington County Shelter, where he was given pain medication, x-rays were taken and he received overnight care.

On Sunday morning, Feb. 16, AWLA’s surgical team led by Dr. Matt Galati worked for two hours to remove the arrow, using bolt cutters to cut off the arrowhead. During surgery, the team determined that despite passing through the cat’s head and shoulder the arrow had not penetrated any major organs or arteries. However, a serious infection had spread from the arrowhead to under the cat’s left arm. After removing the arrow, the team cleaned out the infection, inserted drains, closed the large wounds and neutered the cat. He woke up from surgery about an hour later and was doing fine.

Before surgery, the cat had started purring whenever anyone spoke to him, despite his discomfort and pain. AWLA decided to name him Cupid.

Although the surgery was successful, Cupid still has a long road toward full recovery. He’ll receive antibiotics to treat the infection, as well as ongoing care.

It will cost at least $6,500 to pay for Cupid’s surgery and care. AWLA is currently accepting donations for Cupid and other animals at its shelter on Arlington Mill Drive.
