Whether one counts themselves as a fan of hit television series Euphoria or not (and the set of hyper-cool teenage actors it has promptly thrust into the spotlight, including Hunter Schafer, Sydney Sweeney and Barbie Ferreira), it’s hard to deny the influence the no-holds-barred series is having on our social, and sartorial, milieus.

Beyond the show’s proven potential to act as a catalyst for open conversation on important and timely topics ranging from the politics of gender to drug addiction and the difficulties of navigating relationships as a young adult, Euphoria has also given way to a bold exploration of fashion and make-up, encouraging us to experiment with swathes of colour and team unlikely looks together to create interesting juxtapositions.

Doniella Davy, head make-up artist on the show, has shaken up make-up as we know it and reinvigorated a thirst for resplendent colour, sequins and glitter we didn’t know we lacked but now definitely feel. It was inevitable then that the many memorable looks she created for the show would infiltrate the subconscious of designers this week, showcasing their wares at New York Fashion Week for spring 2020.

At Helmut Lang, flashes of neon on the lids shaped in exaggerated cat eyes complemented monochromatic black and white tailoring in order to formulate an unexpected contrast that nevertheless worked. For the look at Oscar de la Renta, soft strokes of bold colour (think yellow, blue and peach) accentuated a bright palette, gesturing to audiences to dress for spring in full swing. And where Tom Ford showed an ombré lid for evening, to pair with a voluminous orange full skirt here, a Grecian-style white jumpsuit there, Marc Jacobs gave each of his models a singular make-up look, meaning references abounded with with some channelling Twiggy with larger-than-life lashes and others displaying hints of Sweeney’s character Cassie Howard on the show.
