Everything that happened at the 2019 MTV VMAs after parties

Of all the events on the awards season calendar, the MTV Video Music Awards has always proudly put its hand up as the most outlandish awards show offering—and we’re not just talking about the flesh-baring, mesh-donning, and often technicolour, red carpet looks we’ve seen over the show’s 28-year run.

This year’s show did not disappoint its iconic moment-heavy heritage. Taylor Swift gave us all an opening number for the ages—complete with an on-stage recreation of her You Need To Calm Down video, holograms, a fleet of vividly-dressed back up-dancers, and a standing ovation from her now-married ex, Joe Jonas. Missy Elliot brought her Work It music video back from 2002 into 2019 with the help of her 2002 backup dancer, Alyson Stoner.

And, along with the rest of the world, our eyes were firmly planted on Miley Cyrus belting out an emotional rendition of Slide Away, the song she had released just five days after her highly-publicised divorce from Liam Hemsworth was made public. Throw in a presenting blunder from John Travolta and a Lizzo performance backed by a rather large inflatable backside, and you’ve got yourself a memorable VMAs show.

But as much as we enjoyed every on-stage moment of this year’s show, we’ve got to admit, we were keenly watching what celebrities got up to post-show.

Miley Cyrus and Kaitlynn Carter arrived together
Having already reportedly accompanied the singer backstage just moments before she stepped out to perform her rumoured break-up song, Slide Away, Kaitlynn Carter then accompanied Miley Cyrus to a VMAs after party.

Twinning in a blue jean and white T-shirt look, the pair arrived hand-in-hand with Cyrus’s mum, Tish Cyrus, in tow. Fuelling romance rumours, Entertainment Tonight reports a witness at the event noted Cyrus and Carter looked “very happy and playful”, but that they “didn’t stay long”.

Notably not on display at the party, was the fresh ink the singer reportedly debuted on-stage earlier that evening. Widely rumoured to be a response to her break-up with Hemsworth in addition to her earlier performance at the ceremony, Cyrus had her new dainty tattoo on full display while crooning her new tune.

As reported by People, the tattoo reads: “My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free,” a lyric from the Pixies’s song, The Thing, so it’s no surprise many are treating the now-permanent prose on her arm as a visual reading of her feelings around her impending divorce.

Gigi Hadid and Taylor Swift had their first public reunion in months
Swapping out her many multi-coloured outfits donned throughout the evening in favour of a semi-sheer, sequinned black jumpsuit, Swift stepped out with her long-time BFF, Gigi Hadid, for the first time in months. Joined by sister Bella, the model siblings—who were twinning from hair-to-heels in nude hues—were spotted joining the Lover singer in celebrating her show-stopping opening number, and more importantly, her win for 2019’s Video of the Year award.

Tyler Cameron arrived to meet Gigi Hadid
Although Swift and the Hadid sisters arrived as a trio, their group of three didn’t last past their VMAs after party entry. Spotted entering the same venue, Bachelorette US alum Tyler Cameron wasted little time trying to meet up with Gigi Hadid (the rumoured couple have reportedly seen each other multiple times this month already). And, according to a fellow after party attendee, Cameron could not be more comfortable with Hadid and her girl gang.

“Taylor greeted him with a big hug,” the witness told E! News, adding: “Tyler and Gigi shared a kiss.” Going on, the party-goer also noted that they seemed to already be an “intimate group,” adding that “Gigi’s friends seem very familiar with Tyler and comfortable around him. He and Gigi were touchy-feely and very cute all night.”
