Renée Zellweger is starring in what could be an Oscar contender, the Judy Garland biopic, entitled Judy. Zellweger embodies the late entertainer in the first official trailer released for the project. Much like other musical biopics of late, like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman, Judy promises to supply key musical numbers, romance, drama and intrigue.

This year began with a quick re-emergence of Zellweger with the Netflix series What/If, but Judy could see the Academy Award winner with another nomination. For those of you a bit unclear on what to expect, we’ve dissected the trailer, and gathered all the info you need to know before the film hits theatres later this year.

Judy hits cinemas in Australia on October 10, 2019.

Judy Garland signed her first movie contract at the tender age of 13, and had several film credits by the age of 20, including The Wizard of Oz, which won the actress a special Academy Award. The film adaptation of her life and career though focuses on Garland’s 30 years post The Wizard of Oz and follows the Somewhere Over the Rainbow singer as she prepares for a five-week concert series at the Talk of the Town in London in late 1968, and the final months of her life before her death in 1969.

The film will also focus on the tough choice between family and fame, Garland’s struggles with addiction and depression, and delve into the whirlwind romance with her would be fifth husband, a gentleman named Mickey Deans.

Obviously, Renée Zellweger is in the lead role as Judy Garland but is accompanied by Finn Wittrock as her fifth husband, Mickey Deans, Rufus Sewell as Garland’s third husband, Sidney Luft, and Michael Gambon (aka Albus Dumbledore) as her manager Bernard Defont. Game of Thrones alum, Bella Ramsey plays Garland’s eldest daughter, Lorna Luft, and Irish actress known for her time on The Tudors, Gemma-Leah Devereux plays Garland’s other daughter, Liza Minnelli. Yes, you read that right, Liza Minelli is related to Judy Garland.
