If the first Wonder Woman film was any indication, the world is definitely ready for more female superheroes. Now, it has been confirmed there will be a sequel, Wonder Woman 1984—and we literally couldn’t be happier.
Set to star Gal Gadot as the lead superhero, the film will again be directed by Patty Jenkins, who led the first to fame when it was released in 2017. So far, details are scarce on the finer points of the film, but news that Kristen Wiig has been confirmed for the villain role has gotten fans very excited indeed. Here’s everything we know so far about the highly-anticipated sequel.
Who has been cast?
Revealed via the director’s own Twitter account, Jenkins announced Kristen Wiig has been cast to play Cheetah, who according to The Hollywood Reporter, is a DC comics villain known to have “superhuman strength and agility.” Wiig is set to join Gadot and Chris Pine, who played Steve Trevor in the first film. As Trevor sacrificed his life at the end of the movie, we can’t help but wonder how the sequel plans to bring him back. Pedro Pascal, of Narcos fame, has also been cast and while his role is yet to be revealed, a first look tweeted by the director showing the actor in 1980s businessman attire has led fans to believe he may be playing megalomaniac Maxwell Lord.
What will the storyline be?
At this stage, very few details regarding the sequel’s plot have been revealed however, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will be set in the 1980s to the backdrop of the Cold War, with many saying Wiig will play a Soviet-era type feline-like villain called Cheetah. Gadot has since treated fans to a sneak peak of Wonder Woman herself, sharing the film’s first official poster in June 2019.
When will it air?
While the sequel was originally set to air on November 1, 2019, Gal Gadot took to twitter in October 2018 to announce that the release date had been pushed back, before confirming filming had wrapped via Instagram in December 2018. Wonder Woman 1984 will now hit cinemas on June 5, 2020, a total of seven months later. Shortly after the actress tweeted the news, Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein confirmed the change of date. “We had tremendous success releasing the first Wonder Woman film during the summer, so when we saw an opportunity to take advantage of the changing competitive landscape, we did,” he said in a statement. “This move lands the film exactly where it belongs.”
For now, we’ll take these details as gospel—a Gal Gadot, Kristen Wiig on-screen fight might just be the best thing we’ve ever heard of.
