Alessandro Michele’s recent spring/summer 2020 show was undeniably as Gucci as it gets. There were straitjackets, riding crops, black vinyl chokers, arm holsters filled with Gucci’s new bullet lipsticks, and last but not least, monogrammed pillow backpacks.
If you’re wondering what a pillow backpack is, you’re likely not alone. What appears to be a new invention, the pillow backpack that Michele sent down the Gucci runway is made up of a series of leather straps that come together to form a carrier custom-sized for a cushion.
“Fashion has a function: to let people walk through fields of possibilities,” the artistic director told US Vogue of his most recent collection, and let people walk through fields of possibilities the pillow backpack does. Here to make travelling that much more comfortable, and ultimately, far more stylish, the bag’s design is one that has Gucci fans eager to pack their pillows and set themselves up for a convenient commute.

Never one to shy away from envelope-pushing fashion, Michele shared at a post-show press conference, per US Vogue, that he’s “afraid of getting bored.” Despite this confession, we have no doubt that given his knack for designing niche products with mass appeal, Michele will not be showing any signs of slowing down any time soon.
“I always have to try something new,” the director added, and many of the elements of his spring/summer 2020 show were just that–new and rather noteworthy. Opening with a group of models emerging from behind corrugated metal gates dressed in straitjackets, the show broke the mould as each one walked across moving runways.
If you’re wondering whether or not your pillow will fit in Gucci’s new backpack–which will likely be worn by some of the fashion world’s most frequent flyers–never fear, as it would seem that the carrier comes complete with it’s very own blue and white monogrammed pillow. What’s not to love?
