Hayman Island resort has reopened with a $135 million makeover
Some pretty wonderful things have happened in InterContinenal hotels. Film star Grace Kelly met her royal husband, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, at the InterContinental Carlton Cannes in the south of France. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr put the finishing touches on his historic ‘I Have a Dream’ speech at the Willard InterContinental in Washington D.C. As a little girl, Queen Elizabeth loved to ride her tricycle through the garden of her house at 145 Piccadilly – which is now the InterContinental London Park Lane.

But it’s not all cultural moments and sweet memories. In 2017, Cyclone Debbie devastated Queenland’s Hayman Island resort with torrential rain and winds exceeding 250 kilometres per hour. Ruined, it was forced to close. Until now.

Following a $135 million refurbishment, Hayman Island by InterContinental has just welcomed the first guests to the island in two years. Vogue Living had a sneak peak at the culinary offerings a month ago, and they did not disappoint. With five different food destinations offering everything from fresh-caught seafood to Italian pizza to zesty pan-Asian cuisine, even the fussiest palates should be pleased.

The Hayman experience begins before guests have even set foot on the island, when they are picked up from the mainland by luxury catamaran, helicopter or seaplane. Beautiful pools, ocean panoramas and tropical gardens await them at the resort and memorable day trips are also on offer, like a flight over the world-famous heart reef (the site of innumerable marriage proposals), swimming with green sea turtles at Langford Island, hiking remote rainforests or boating to the turquoise waters of Whitehaven Beach.

The InterContinental chose DBI Designs, DAARC and KY Design to oversee the refurbishment of the 166-room private resort, which boasts stunning views across the Coral Sea. The hotel is designed around water – the ocean and pools (including an infinity pool) take centre stage.

Guests can do as much or as little as they like on Hayman. Put little ones in the Planet Trekkers Kids Club and retreat to the spa, or explore the beautiful outdoors with snorkeling, diving, fishing, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding. Racquet sports, a golf simulator and a state-of-the-art gym are also on offer.

“Today marks a special day for our team who have worked tirelessly on the transformation of this sensational island resort,” said general manager Mark Eletr on the day of the grand reopening. “Designed to be discreetly private, welcoming to families as well as couples, with a meaningful connection to its surrounds, Hayman Island by InterContinental is the embodiment of a luxury resort experience reimagined for the modern traveller.”
