Inside Hamilton Island Race Week 2019

August 26, 2019 Off By HotelSalesCareers

Just as soon as the 36th annual Hamilton Island Race Week kicked off, the iconic regatta has wrapped up for another year in equally luxurious fare as the years that came before it.

This year, the race week saw the second-largest fleet in its almost four decade-strong history, with over 230 boats signing on to content, dubbing the Hamilton Island Race Week as the largest offshore keelboat regatta in the Southern Hemisphere.

But while the gaze of many race week goers was firmly planted on the offshores of the island, a number of others took a slight step away from the sidelines to enjoy the relaxed on-shore atmosphere that attendees have come to know and love.

As is custom with Hamilton Island Race Week, the schedules of many who made their way to the island this year were filled with private dinners sampling some of the finest ingredients both the local islands and Australia as a whole has to offer, in addition to champagne lunches and beach-bound luncheons.

Playing host to a number of the week’s stand out events—including an intimate dinner with artist Sophie Cape and respected art identity Tim Olsen, and the annual Paspaley luncheon—was luxury Hamilton Island resort Qualia, which opened up its tranquil spa and private beach for each event, respectively.

For the very first time, Spa Qualia opened its doors and welcomed its first race week gathering. Bringing together one of Australia’s most distinguished young artists, Sophie Cape, with Olsen Gallery’s Tim Olsen, guests enjoyed a Q&A between the two prominent Australian art figures, delving into Cape’s past as an Olympian, as well as the stories behind a number of her works.

As host, Nicky Oatley led the event on into the evening, and guests enjoyed Charles Heidsieck Rose Sauvage Champagne and a three course meal prepared by Qualia executive chef, Mark Jensen.

After the dinner came the stand-out social event in the itineraries of many attendees—Paspaley’s annual luncheon. Guests were given an exclusive preview of the luxury jewellery house’s new Megisti collection, which officially launches this October, and is a celebration of founder, Nicholas Paspaley Snr’s, arrival in Sydney 100 years ago.

As Paspaley’s journey from his Greek Island home of Kastellorizo to the Kimberley is the core inspiration of the soon-to-be-released collection, of course, the theme of the afternoon was a reflection of the brand’s origin story. Guests all attended dressed in white, spending their afternoon lunching and dancing on the sands of Pebble Beach.
