Is the trench coat Meghan Markle’s signature on-duty item?
From the moment Meghan Markle was first romantically linked to Prince Harry, every sartorial decision the former actor and now Duchess of Sussex made has been analysed, mimicked, and immortalised. From her royal protocol-breaking outfits of choice, to those that served to send specific messages to her legions of fans, there is no denying that Markle’s style has made a direct impact on the fashion industry.
The Meghan Markle effect, which drives home the duchess’s influential pull, took hold shortly after the 38-year-old catapulted to royal status; every look she steps out in promptly makes headlines, sets the season’s trends and then swiftly sells out. One such trend just so happens to be the return of the trench coat – a style Markle has championed since the very beginning. Dabbling in different versions of the chic and versatile wardrobe staple, Markle appears to be a fan of both the trench coat and the trench dress.
In June 2018, just one month after wedding the Duke of Sussex, Markle stepped out for the 2018 Sydney Invictus Games’s UK Team Trials in London, wearing a reasonably-priced Aritzia trench which went on to sell out in many of its various sizes and hues. Shortly after that occasion, the duchess sported another trench coat while visiting South Melbourne beach in Australia, this time designed by Australian designer, Martin Grant.
Upon returning to the UK, where summer had taken hold, Markle traded in the trench coat for the trench dress – a style we have come to identify as one of the young royal’s favourites. Despite the fact that it is undeniably difficult to pull off such a silhouette, Markle wears the look effortlessly, time and time again.
The duchess first stepped out in the sleeveless style when accompanying Prince Harry on a visit to the Nelson Mandela Centenary Exhibition at Southbank, and recently rewore the same blush pink Nonie dress on the final day of her royal tour of South Africa, while visiting Graça Machel, Nelson Mandela’s widow (above). As the evidence continues to pile up, there is no denying the trench is Markle’s signature on-duty item. For further proof, scroll on.
