Jeffrey Epstein left a note complaining about his prison conditions and fashioned multiple nooses out of bed sheets, new images have revealed.

The 66-year-old convicted sex offender was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell in August while awaiting trial on new sex trafficking charges.

Pictures of the scene taken by the New York medical examiner’s office showed Epstein’s cell littered with multiple prescription pill bottles, electrical cords and enough bed sheets for several inmates covering the floor.

According to CBS News, which first obtained the images, the wealthy financier also left a note complaining about the conditions within the prison, including being sent burnt food and having “giant bugs crawling over my hands”. “No fun,” he added, underlining the words.

Epstein also claimed in the note that one guard left him “in a locked shower stall for one hour”.

The trove of evidence also included graphic images of Epstein’s corpse showing a severe neck injury and his broken hyoid bone which had been fractured in three places.

The pictures have prompted Dr Michael Baden, who was hired by Epstein’s brother to investigate the death, to suggest Epstein may not have taken his own life.

Speaking to CBS 60 Minutes, he pointed to the fact that the noose found in Epstein’s cell did not appear to have any blood, despite the financier’s corpse showing a bloodied wound around his neck, suggesting the injury was more akin to someone who had been strangled with a wire.

Dr Baden also argued that the absence of an image of Epstein inside his cell made it difficult to conclusively determine the cause of death.

An autopsy photo of Epstein’s hyoid bone, at the base of his neck, also showed fractures in three places, which Dr Baden said was unheard of in a suicidal hanging.

The New York medical examiner’s office denied the claims and said it stands “firmly’’ behind its ruling that Epstein killed himself.

Legal experts have noted that Epstein’s accusers could argue his suicide amount to an acknoweldgment of his guilt as they pursue compensation from the businessman’s estate in court.

Meanwhile one of Epstein’s lawyers, Martin Weinberg, has previously suggested his defence team could mount a suit against the jail holding Epstein, if they concluded he had been murdered.

Mr Weinberg denied that the action was financially motivated, telling US media “it is as much about principle as money”. “No one should die in jail, and any lawsuit would be seeking to determine who was responsible for Mr Epstein’s death as well as for the horrific conditions in which he was detained,” he said.

Epstein, who was accused of abusing multiple underage girls, was being held in the Metropolitan Correctional Center in downtown Manhattan when he was found dead on August 10.

The two prison guards responsible for monitoring the businessman the night he hanged himself have since been charged with falsifying records and conspiracy after it emerged they failed to check on Epstein every half an hour.
