Pairing high street with a designer label is a classic sartorial trick long employed by fashion mavens everywhere; not only is it fashion-forward to pair a standout designer piece with an interesting-yet-inexpensive accessory, it also won’t break the wardrobe budget.

However, high-low dressing is not a style generally associated with the British royal family. The working royals, particularly the women, are expected to dress to a high — read: designer — standard for the multitude of official engagements they are duty-bound to attend, and have been allotted the wardrobe budget to accommodate that. And, given they have access to some of the most beautiful pieces of jewellery ever made, they also don’t typically accessorise with jewellery from the high street.

Of course, the next-gen royals, specifically Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton — who are both fashion icons, with such a strong and immediate influence on fashion that the minute either of them step out in a new look, it sells out — are both charting their own paths in various ways, including showing they’re part of a modern monarchy by acting in relatable, of-the-era ways.

So, it should come as no surprise that after having the summer off, when Middleton attended her first solo official engagement to unveil the latest Back to Nature garden at RHS Wisley on Tuesday, she would bring one unexpected-yet-relatable and modern element to the day. And that element? High-low dressing.

Pulling a classic high-low move, the duchess stepped out in an on-theme floral print $2,707 Emilia Wickstead midi dress  (that has, of course, already sold out on Net-A-Porter), paired with earrings which People reports have been identified as $9 Simple Filigree Short Drop earrings from high street British accessories brand, Accessorize.

People reports the earrings have sold out, but there are plenty of similar styles on the brand’s international site — such as the $11 Filigree Teardrop Short Drop earrings — should fans of Middleton’s high-low look be keen to have their own affordable Middleton-approved high-low moment.
