Earlier this month Prince Harry issued a rare statement about his wife, Meghan Markle’s, treatment by the media. In the statement, published on the royal couple’s website, the duke wrote about the “ruthless campaign” he says the British tabloid press have been running against his wife and revealed that they are taking legal action against the press over a private letter that he states was “published unlawfully”.
This unprecedented legal move has resulted in much debate both in the press and on the internet, with many voicing their opinions on the matter.
And while the public and press’s opinions have been divided, there’s one group of women who have openly sided with Meghan Markle in this matter. reports that in an unprecedented show of support, on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, 72 female members of British parliament “released an open letter in support of Meghan [Markle]”.
The publication reports the 72 signatories to the letter “represent one third of all women in parliament and multiple parties”. One female member of parliament, Holly Lynch—who represents Halifax—shared the letter on Twitter with a caption that detailed their united stand: “Women MPs from all political parties have put aside our differences to stand in solidarity with the Duchess of Sussex today and are sending her this open letter.”
The letter, which is addressed to Meghan Markle, states that the signatories wish to “express” their “solidarity” with the duchess “in taking a stand against the often distasteful and misleading nature of the stories printed in a number of our national newspapers concerning you, your character and your family.”
The letter goes on to call out the “outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories.” And while the letter doesn’t set out any specific action it does note that the signatories to the letter “stand with” the duchess in “solidarity” and “will use the means at our disposal to ensure that our press accept your right to privacy and show respect, and that their stories reflect the truth.”
Markle has, as yet, made no comment on this much-needed letter of support, following the tough time the couple recently revealed they’ve had. But, it’s certain to have reached her ears given her close friend and sometime stylist, Jessica Mulroney, posted the letter on her Twitter account with a supportive caption that read: “This is what I’m talking about.”
