Over the weekend, British free-to-air television channel ITV aired a documentary which featured footage captured during the course of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s recent African royal tour, titled Harry & Meghan: An African Journey.

While the documentary covered a variety of topics, it was the very open, honest and rather heart-wrenching conversation that the film’s host Tom Bradby had with the Duchess of Sussex that caught our collective attention and quickly made headlines.

Per People, Bradby asked the 38-year-old royal and new mother in said conversation about how she is managing what her husband accurately described as the British tabloid press’ “ruthless” treatment, and the lack of privacy she’s experienced.

Confessing that she is taking “each day as it comes”, a visibly emotional Markle shared: “I think the grass is always greener. You have no idea. It’s really hard to understand what it’s like. I know what it seems like it should be, but it’s a very different thing.”

Going into further detail, the royal added that she and Prince Harry often talk about their current predicament, a confession which consequently revealed her endearing nickname for her husband.

“I have said for a long time to H, that’s what I call him, ‘It’s not enough to just survive something. That’s not the point of life. You have got to thrive. You have got to feel happy,’” she told Bradby, as confirmed People.

“I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a ‘stiff upper lip’. I really tried, but I think that what that does internally is probably really damaging,” she continued, adding she would be far more understanding if the scrutiny she is under was fair.

“I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair. And that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile,” said Markle. “If things were fair … If I’d done something wrong, I’d be the first one to go ‘Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry. I would never do that,’” she continued. “But when people are saying things that are just untrue and they are being told they’re untrue but they’re allowed to still say them—I don’t know anybody in the world who would feel like that’s okay.”

Throughout the course of the interview—which should serve to open up the eyes of many when it comes to Markle’s recent treatment by the press—the royal also touched on the pressure of being a new mother, and the negative attention she has been subjected to in regards to it, People reports.

Poignantly, when the new mother was asked how she was feeling, she responded, “thank you for asking because not many people have asked if I’m okay, but it’s a very real thing to be going through behind the scenes.” And that quote alone speaks volumes.

“Any woman, especially when they’re pregnant, you’re really vulnerable, and so that was made really challenging,” she told Bradby. “And then when you have a newborn, you know. And especially as a woman, it’s a lot. So you add this on top of just trying to be a new mom or trying to be a newlywed. It’s um…yeah,” she emotionally concluded.

Per People, Bradby also asked Markle if it “would be fair” to say that she’s “not really okay, as in it’s really been a struggle,” and she responded with “yes” before adding that she’s thankful to have both her husband and her son by her side.

“It’s okay,” she said. “The good thing is that I’ve got my baby and I’ve got my husband and they’re the best.”

Prince Harry also took the time to speak passionately about his wife’s “ruthless” treatment, sharing that while he understands “part of this job and part of any job, like everybody, means putting on a brave face and turning a cheek to a lot of the stuff,” he said that “for me and for my wife, of course, there’s a lot of stuff that hurts—especially when the majority of it is untrue.”

“All we need to do is focus on being real, focus on being the people we are and standing up for what we believe in,” he added, per People. “I will not be bullied into carrying a game that killed my mum.”

This documentary aired shortly after it was revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are taking legal action against Daily Mail for publishing Markle’s private letter from her father, as well as MGN and News UK, for what People has reported to be the illegal interception of voicemail messages.
