According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gerwig is set to write and direct a remake of the film Little Women for Columbia Pictures, and has recruited the stars of her solo directorial debut Lady Bird, Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet.

Little Women was originally a novel, published in 1869 by American author Louisa May Alcott. It tells the coming of age story of four teenage sisters and their mother set in Massachusetts during the Civil War era. It was made into a film in 1994 and starred Winona Ryder, Christian Bale, Susan Sarandon and Kirsten Dunst.

Screenwriter and film director Robin Swicord, who wrote the first film, is set to join Amy Pascal and Denise Di Novi as producers on the 2019 adaptation.

As per Vanity Fair, we also now have a first look at the film. The images show the cast on set and in costume, wearing a mix of prairie dresses, wicker baskets, and straw boaters.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, co-stars Saoirse Ronan and Timothée Chalamet will be joined by a star-studded cast, including Florence Pugh, Emma Watson, Laura Dern, Bob Odenkirk, Eliza Scanlen, Chris Cooper and Meryl Streep. According to IMDb, Pugh will play Amy March, Streep will take on the role of Aunt March, Watson will assume the role of Meg March, and Dern will star as Marmee March. In addition, Sharp Objects’ Scanlen will play Beth March, Ronan will play Jo March and Chalamet will play Theodore ‘Laurie’ Laurence in the 2019 adaption.

Paparazzi have snapped a series of behind-the-scenes images of the film’s Massachusetts set, which have given fans a sneak peek at the cast in their costumes. Watson has also released a series of her own behind-the-scenes images on Instagram, leaving us all wanting more.

Reports confirm production on Little Women began in October 2018, before – according to Laura Dern – filming wrapped in December 2018. Just days before Christmas, Dern took to Instagram with a repost of one of Emma Watson’s behind-the-scenes images, writing: “What an incredible family. What an amazing time! Thank you Louisa. And thank you Massachusetts.” In what can surely be described as a Christmas miracle, the film is set to open in theaters on December 25, 2019.

Little Women, which was originally a 1869 novel written by American author Louisa May Alcott, is a coming-of-age tale set in Massachusetts during the Civil War era. The plot centres around the story of a woman named Marmee March, and her four teenage daughters: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy.

According to The Los Angeles Times, producer Robin Swicord has revealed the 2019 adaption will focus more on the sisters’ lives. “It’s really taking a look at what it is for a young woman to enter the adult world,” she says, adding that it will also jump back and forth in time. Swicord then confirmed that while romantic, the film is also “very adult and interesting and thoughtful.”

“I knew Little Women; I hadn’t read it. But I’ve read it since. I understood it to be a literary classic, but it’s crazy, day by day in the rehearsals, I get more imbued in the legend of it all,” Chalamet recently told Variety. “We’re shooting in the Massachusetts area where it was written. So we have a lot of people on the crew or that are just around that, like, the book is very dear to their heart and to their youths, as well,” he added.

This story will be updated as news regarding the reboot continues to make headlines, so be sure to watch this space.
