Renowned interior designer Paola Navone has collaborated with McDonalds in France, forming a fast-food-meets-high-design duo we certainly didn’t expect. Teaming up to overhaul seven French McDonalds restaurants, Navone was enlisted to bring her own take to the spaces, which are located all over the country — including in Paris’s 5th arrondissement.

Packing each store with colour and movement, Navone’s take on the traditional fast food store is uniquely bubbly and provides a healthy dose of fun. Starting with a white base, Navone draws on shapes and brightly-coloured hues to layer the interiors, which are complete with everything from overhanging exposed lightbulbs to exaggerated chairs and statement block-coloured walls.

“I always enjoy creating relaxing, delicate and never aggressive atmospheres that make everyone feel at ease,” Navone told Dezeen. Using durable materials perfect for the high traffic restaurants, Navone altered her usual way of working in order to conform to the needs of the space, using laminated tiles on the floor and printed laminate on the tables.

Of the crafty, homemade-style space, Navone has incorporated elements of coziness, including the construction of house-like structures over some tables, creating the illusion of a separated space — not unlike its own room within the restaurant.

Complete with tables by Gervasoni, chairs by Cappellini, Chaises Nicolle and Gervasoni and lighting from Martinelli Luce, the most recent McDonalds design on Boulevard de L’hôpital, is certainly a step up from the standard fare. But despite the well-thought-out eating spaces, chic lighting and textured walls, patrons will still be treated to classic cheeseburgers and fries served in paper bags — the room might have had an upgrade, but the food remains the same. Maybe it’s just us, but a cheeky cheeseburger always tastes better when we’re sitting in a chic chair.
