Rey Mysterio Signs Deal w/ Lucha Libre Promotion “Aro Lucha” as Co-Owner & Performer

Rey Mysterio has signed a deal with the Aro Lucha promotion as both co-owner and an in-ring performer, according to a new report from Tennessean.com.

Aro Lucha taped a pilot episode in Nashville last year that sold out, followed by a series of independent shows in Texas that reportedly drew very well. Jason Brown is CEO and Konnan will head up creative for future episodes, although currently the company is still looking to find a television deal. They’re also doing something fairly unique via crowdfunding, by offering fans a minority stake in the company itself.

Mysterio: “I think what we are doing with Aro Lucha being fan-owned is revolutionary. We are giving the fans something they have never had before, a voice and a chance to get in on the action.”

Filming is supposed to begin early this summer, with May or June currently being targeted and a series of live events set between now and then. At this point it’s unknown whether the contract Mysterio signed would prohibit him from making appearances with WWE. Obviously if Aro Lucha finds a television deal and he’s featured prominently on it every week, it’s highly unlikely WWE would use them regardless of his contractual status. That may be a long way off though, so only time will tell.
