Following the success of , the Netflix hit that saw Sandra Bullock assume the role of both lead actress and executive producer, the Academy Award-winning star is said to be working on a new project, this time with Amazon.
Per , Bullock has reportedly enlisted the help of Akiva Goldsman and John Legend, who are set to help the star executive produce a comedy drama series that will be loosely based on her college years. Script writer K.C. Perry has also been asked to help write and executive produce the Amazon series.
While Bullock hasn’t executive produced a TV series since working on George Lopez’s eponymous ABC comedy from 2002 until 2007, Akiva Goldsman, who is best known for his work on and , has many executive producing credits to his name and Legend is celebrated for his work on and .
reports that the untitled series, slated to be set in the world of music and dance, “will take place in the American deep south in the 1980s, where one darkly off-beat young woman defies expectations and sets out in search of love, community, and an identity of her own.”
Although it’s difficult to visualise Bullock as “darkly off-beat,” we can’t help but imagine what the plot will reveal about one of Hollywood’s favourite actresses. Per , the protagonist will also be joined by “a group of young outcasts” as she goes about challenging cultural norms.
Slated to touch on everything from drag culture, to mental health and the AIDS epidemic, also confirms the series will see the group “dare to be themselves, despite facing real danger in doing so.”
Given that Bullock, Legend, and Goldsman are each established artists, and boast Oscars across the categories Best Actress, Best Original Song, and Best Adapted Screenplay respectively, we have no doubt this Amazon project will be one that is well-worth watching, so be sure to watch this space.
