St. Cloud State maintains top spot in latest NCAA DII poll

The St. Cloud State University wrestling team (12-0, 1-0 NSIC) maintained its top spot in the latest release of the NCAA DI Wrestling Coaches Association Top 25 national poll, which was published on Jan. 18.

The Huskies led the list of DII teams with 103 points in the poll, while Notre Dame (Ohio) was second on the list with 80 points. The Huskies also had nine individuals ranked in the poll, including #1 ranked Larry Bomstad at 157-pounds and James Pleski at 149-pounds.

SCSU’s Brett Velasquez gained a #5 ranking at 125-pounds in the poll, while Jarred Oftedahl moved up to #3 in the poll at 141-pounds. At 165-pounds, Travis Holt was ranked #6 in the poll, while Kolton Eischens also moved up to #3 in this week’s poll at 174-pounds. At 184-pounds, SCSU’s Brady Nelson made his poll debut with a #8 national ranking. Vince Dietz continued to climb in the rankings with a #6 tag at 197-pounds. The group of nationally ranked Huskies was completed by Lawrence Phillips who was ranked 10th at 285-pounds.

The Huskies will continue their 2017-18 season on Jan. 19 with a 7 p.m. match at Minot State. SCSU will complete the weekend road trip with a 2 p.m. dual at the University of Mary.

SCSU has already won the 2018 NWCA Division II National Duals this season and the Huskies have now won 21 consecutive dual matches dating back to a loss to Indianapolis at the Ranger Duals in 2016-17. SCSU is the six-time defending NSIC champion and the Huskies have not lost a dual match in league competition since an 18-13 loss to Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011.
