Streaming Tightens Its Grip on the Golden Globes

It's time once again to turn on The Monitor, WIRED's roundup of the latest in the world of culture, from box-office news to announcements about hot new trailers. In today's installment: Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon dominate the Golden Globes; Ryan Reynolds logs onto Reddit; and Spider-Man's next villain is no longer so mysterious.

Golden Globetrotters

The big streamers will be well-represented at next month's 76th Golden Globes Awards: The nominations, which were announced this morning, feature multiple TV-category nods for Amazon (including Homecoming, A Very English Scandal, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel); Netflix (The Kominsky Method, Bodyguard, GLOW), and Hulu (The Handmaid's Tale). In the film competitions, Netflix's Roma—currently playing in limited release, which for Netflix, means it's being projected on the side of a Fuddruckers in Pomona—earned screenplay and director nominations for Alfonso Cuarón. It also landed a spot in the Best Foreign-Language Film race (the film wasn't eligible for the Globes' Best Picture categories). The award ceremony itself, which will be co-hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, airs January 6 on NBC. That gives you plenty of time to catch up on A Very English Scandal, which is fantastic—easily Hugh Grant's best work since the (sadly snubbed!) Paddington 2.

Rad 'Medicine'

Even Ryan Reynolds stays up late reading Reddit: The actor is producing a big-screen version of The Patient Who Nearly Drove Me Out of Medicine, a horror tale based on a multi-part novella that first appeared on the site's No Sleep forum in 2015. Written by Jaspar DeWitt, the story has an ace opening line: "I write this because as of now, I am not sure if I am privy to a terrible secret, or if I myself am insane." Which is how we feel when we're trying to find showtimes for Roma!

Gyllenhaal Goes Spider-HAM

After months of rumors, Jake Gyllenhaal confirmed his villainous role in next year's Spider-Man: Far From Home, the webslinger's next MCU movie: He'll play Mysterio, the long-running Spidey-hater who was created during the Stan Lee-Steve Ditko era (in the comics, Mysterio used his skills as a former effects-artist and stunt performer to aid his life of crime). Far From Home—no, not that one—will bring back Spider-Man: Homecoming co-stars Tom Holland as Spider-Man, Zendaya as MJ (pronounced "Meechee"), and Michael Keaton as the Vulture. The movie opens in July; until then, have fun singing "Mysterio" to the tune of Def Leppard's "Hysteria" until you go crazy.
