As if disarming a gunman in the presence of high school students wasn’t a laudable feat enough, the manner in which ex-Oregon wide receiver Keanon Lowe did so back on May 17 is truly astonishing.

Through a public records request, KOIN 6 News obtained video surveillance footage of the college football star-turned high school coach leading the formerly-armed 18-year-old Angel Granados-Diaz out of a classroom at Parkrose High School and handing off his loaded shotgun to another person.

Lowe appears to hug, and perhaps console Granados-Diaz, who according to an official, came on campus during a mental health crisis.

KOIN 6 also obtained the footage of the alarming moments leading up to Lowe’s confrontation.

Lowe, who is the school’s football and track and field coach, was initially reported to have “tackled the suspect to the ground.” It’s unclear if he did tackle Granados-Diaz inside the classroom before leading him out, or if reports of him “subduing” the subject were misconstrued.

Students present on the scene reported at the time that Granados-Diaz had intended to kill himself; he never pointed the gun at anyone else.

He was given a 36-month probation sentence under a pretrial agreement and charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm in a public building, and one count of unlawful possession of a loaded firearm in public, according to KOIN 6. He pled guilty in early October.

Lowe played at Oregon from 2011-14. He had 68 catches for 891 yards and 11 touchdowns in his Ducks career. He averaged nearly 15 yards per catch in 2014, the year Oregon went to the College Football Playoff National Championship Game and lost to Ohio State.
