The best street style from the 2019 Caulfield Cup
On Saturday October 12, racegoers stepped out at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse for Caulfield Guineas Day, subsequently kicking off the week-long 2019 Caulfield Cup carnival—which culminates in the Caulfield Cup itself on October 19—marking yet another year of one of the country’s biggest days on the racing calendar.
Unlike Derby Day, Melbourne Cup and Oaks Day—which each have long-held dress traditions attendees must adhere to—the Caulfield Cup has no defining dress code, with those attending over the years developing their own terms of dress, with florals, block colours, pantsuits and bold prints reigning supreme for some time now.
Unsurprisingly, given the season and the dominating dress trends, we saw florals in spades this year. Yes, Miranda Priestly once famously deterred us from wearing the print in spring due to its failure to be “ground-breaking”. But if it works, it works. And if nothing else, this month’s attendees have well and truly brought the looks to prove it.
In addition to the seasonal trend, one other stand-out trend for this year’s Caulfield Cup wardrobe was pink, in each and every one of its possible hues. Magenta, ruby, rose, salmon—you name it, we saw it.
And as predicted by racing style experts, many additional trends which were earlier named as dominating spring textures—including lace, straw in millinery and alternative forms of headwear—also presented themselves among the bursts of floral and abundance of the popular seasonal tones.
Sartorial standouts this year include, of course, Australian racing royalty, Kate Waterhouse’s magenta and tangerine houndstooth mini by Rachel Gilbert paired with white headwear in the form of a Nerida Winter headband, Laura Dundovic’s bold black and white tuxedo-inspired pantsuit by Carla Zampatti and a Jeanette Maree pearl headpiece, and Victoria Lee’s tudor-inspired, ultra-feminine white Zimmermann dress which featured pastel florals, button detailing and voluminous sleeves.
