It makes perfect sense that Halloween occurs on October 31, slap bang in the middle of Scorpio season, the sign that rules all things mysterious and mind-bending. It’s a time when the veils between the ‘real’ world and the ‘supernatural’ world are lifted, a time to acknowledge endings and the unknown but also to make space for new beginnings. It’s also a great time for a costume party! If you’re stuck for a spine-tingling ensemble to wear to celebrate the season, look to your star sign for inspiration.

Aquarius
21 January-18 February
As the eccentric genius of the zodiac, you have all sorts of outfit choices that would suit your sign for a Halloween hop. Innovative and inventive, go as a Mad Scientist – check out Doc Brown in the movies. The most famous mad scientist of them all was Dr Frankenstein, who created an electrically-charged companion for his monster, so opt for outfit (above) if Marge Simpson-esque hair is your thing. Since all things futuristic are your forte, a robot or alien costume would also fit the bill. Think: Terminator – all you need is a pair of micro shades, or if you want to put a little more effort into your look go for a blue-all-over alien creation. You’re always ahead of your time so would hit the Halloween spot for you, and as Aquarius is the 11th sign of the zodiac, consider going as Eleven from . So very Aquarius, she was raised in a laboratory and is fiercely protective of her friends. Her quirky retro dress sense and techno mind powers against evil and monsters make her an ideal icon for a new-age Halloween dress-up theme. If you’re going as a duo, choose Mulder and Scully, alien and paranormal investigators from .

Pisces
19 February-20 March
You’re a super-sensitive, intuitive type, which makes your sign linked to beautiful dreams but also to terrible nightmares. You have a knack of getting so close to people that you almost become a little like them, so take a leaf out of the movies and stories, and dress yourself up as a Dementor, a creature whose kiss can extract the very souls and happiness from their victims. A black hooded cape and grey painted skin are all you need to nail this foray into fear. Water is a huge theme for your sign, so a mystical mermaid who lures sailors into peril is an ideal Halloween choice, though with a fishy tail to wear it might mean sitting down all night. It’s all about the make-up, so put a star(fish) in your hair and radiate the irresistible terrors of the deep. Romantic, desperate, long lost love is also a powerful Pisces concept, so with her penchant for night-time tapping at the window to be let in, the ghost of Cathy in – all faded red velvet dress, pale face and draped in billowing white gauze – would tie in with your own often ethereal, floaty, lost soul persona.

Aries
21 March – 20 April
Your dynamic sign is ruled by Mars, the red planet, and your warrior-like nature means you usually love to be in charge so you’d be in Halloween heaven dressed as the horn-headed red devil who rules over hell. Don’t forget the pitchfork but wield it carefully as, odd as it may seem, your sign is heavily linked to sharp objects and blood! This opens up another fright-night option for you in the form of a demonic doctor’s tunic or a fake-blood spattered nurse’s outfit. Go there if you dare! If you’d sooner go down the sinister super hero route, opt for the all-in-one sartorial style of crimson-clad, sharp-tongued, dare-devil or the top-to-toe ruby-hued look of the Scarlet Witch from (above).

Taurus
21 April-21 May
Any one of the seven deadly sins could be the starting point for your sign’s Halloween attire. Let loose, the Taurus dark side has more potential than most to indulge in gluttony, envy, greed, sloth, lust, wrath or pride so use one (or all) as a starting point for your outfit. A splendid spooky alternative would be to frock up as Maleficent (above), the bad fairy responsible for casting the spell that sent Sleeping Beauty into an extended snooze in the fairy tale of old and in the movie of the same name starring Angelina Jolie. Bullish horns? Tick. Ruler over the kind of magical forest realm that your earth sign would love? Tick. Classy black gown? Tick. Taurus is said to have a way with plants so on that green-fingered theme you might consider dressing up as Audrey the hungry-for-humans plant from the film and theatre show or transform yourself into Poison Ivy, Batman’s ecologically-minded but warped admirer/adversary who uses plant toxins for her criminal activities. Give the life of crime a miss, but say yes to the dress as her lethal leaf-green outfit and flame-haired wig ensemble could suit your sign down to the ground.

Gemini
22 May-21 June
As the sign of the twins, Gemini is all about ‘the power of two’ so channel this association with double-acts and hook up with a friend or partner as a demonic (rather than dynamic) duo. Think: real life 1920’s gangsters Bonnie and Clyde, or bling it up as an OTT Kanye and Kim. Better still, dress as actual twins in the shape of the creepy twosome from classic horror film . Check out the original starring Jack Nicholson or the new sequel due out on October 31. Other odd couples to consider are Buffy the Vampire Slayer and her partner Angel, or Shrek and Princess Fiona (above). Or since you love to be provocative and get people thinking and talking, try a twist on with you as the Beast. Going solo? As your multi-tasking and mentally agile sign is often in two minds about situations, consider a split personality look: dressing one side of you as male, one side female, or make your right side a perfect angel and left side a wicked devil, for the best of both worlds.

Cancer
22 June-22 July
Your sign is legendary for having strong maternal instincts, so the costume choice for you is obvious when you think about it: it has to be from ! Wrap those bandages around yourself with tender loving care. Culinary skills are also associated with Cancerians so a perky pumpkin outfit would be appropriate for your sign and for the season. Often considered to be the most home-loving, tranquil and normal of the 12 signs, a dark twist on everyday life would be a simple but effective scare tactic in your quest for the perfect Halloween outfit so, continuing the foodie theme, a (above) style flesh-eating zombie outfit would fit that bill deliciously. Back to the subject of your sign’s legendary parenting skills, consider dressing up as one of the most famous movie mothers: Norman Bates’s mum in the classic horror film . Trawl the op shops for her style, that of a grey-haired old lady in a shawl, who looks like she wouldn’t hurt a fly but who turns out rather horrifyingly to be not at all that she seems.

Leo
23 July-23 August
It’s all about the hair with Leo. Often famous for your flowing mane, a quirky costume choice would be the long-haired Cousin It from if you’re bold enough to go down that path. Boldness is not usually an issue for your sign, as being the centre of attention is your raison-d’etre, A fake white cat on your lap could help you channel the kitty-stroking villain Blofeld from the early movies, or for a more 21st century take on felines try head-to-toe fake fur as a character from the soon-to-be released movie . Gold in all its glory is also strongly associated with your sign, so you might want to strut about as the robot CP30 from or get funky like Beyoncé as Foxy Cleopatra in Austin Power’s movie with opportunities to rock big hair and plenty of slinky gold shimmering outfits. Job done! Super hero movies offer ample dressing up options for you too. Check out Ayesha the golden goddess in , and let’s not forget Catwoman (above), an excellent Halloween choice for your feline sign. Because you’re a little star-struck and starry, channelling an iconic but sadly no longer with us celebrity could also bring applause that could raise the dead.

Libra
23 September-23 October
Horror doesn’t have to be horrible to be effective. Your sign is all about love and beauty so choose a fallen angel as your Halloween fashion theme, offering a chance to wear the diaphanous fabrics that suit you so well, accessorised with broken wings and a slipping halo. As the sign of relationships, you could opt to be the jilted Miss Havisham from . Mis H is all about cobwebs and crinoline, but you could also check out the purple-haired bridal look from Tim Burton’s animated movie , or a blood-spattered bridal gown (search op shops or online auction sites for dresses to wreak havoc upon) and perhaps a fake chainsaw would accessorise and update the ghoulish look perfectly. Going trick or treating with your other half? You can do no worse than to deck yourselves out in homage to Morticia and Gomez Addams, the devilishly loved-up husband and wife couple who head up .

Scorpio
24 October-22 November
It’s your sign’s season to shine, so make the most of all the spooky vibes around Halloween. Rock a look that says sensual vampire (explore the movies pictured above, or the TV series for visual prompts) or a grimly gorgeous ghost, or opt for a mysterious fortune teller ensemble complete with a starry turban and crystal ball. Relying on fate as you often like to do, you might simply pick a random card from a tarot pack to inspire and guide you towards an other-worldly Halloween theme. A plether-clad dominatrix costume might be an empowering and unorthodox alternative! So long as you’re wearing black that’s as dark as the grave this Halloween you’ll be in your element, since you’re a natural shape-shifter.

Sagittarius
23 November-21 December
You’re the stand-up comedian of the zodiac pack, so the Joker is the ideal fiendish disguise for your scarily witty sign. A combo of clashing colours, green hair, white face paint and a smeared red lip is the way to go to transform yourself into this tragi-comic character from the newly-released movie starring Joaquin Phoenix. Or, since your sign’s motto is ‘the more the merrier’ you could make it a team effort and go as the crew or as those pesky, meddling, supernatural mystery-solving kids (and dog) from (above). Linked to all things larger than life, a Godzilla outfit or being kitted out as King Kong – or as a double act with the Naomi Watts character Ann Darrow from the 2005 movie remake – would also be entirely appropriate for Sagittarius. Keep it king-size, comedic and cuddly by transforming yourself into James P Sullivan, the big blue spotted character from .

Capricorn
22 December-20 January
While your sign is linked to so many good things in life, including a solid career path, social status and stability, you also have links to the spookier side of life which give you ample options to dress to impress on Halloween, the darkest day of the year. Your sign rules undertakers and cemeteries so a white-coated mortuary assistant’s outfit or black top-hatted funeral director attire would work for you. In astrology, Capricorn rules bones so you could rock a skeleton-based outfit, with clever make-up to make you resemble a rotting corpse with protruding bones. Or you might make a grand entrance in a black flowing cape and cowl as the figure of death itself. If you’re going as the Grim Reaper, remember that a scythe accessory is essential, not optional! Capricorn also represents history and antiquity, so the faceless Victorian ghost from movie also holds fright-filled possibilities for party apparel.
