At tonight’s 71st annual Emmys awards show in Los Angeles, Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox took to the red carpet in a frothy tiered gown by Monsoori that was heavy on the tulle. While the single-shouldered dress was fabulous, Cox’s accessory—a bespoke acrylic clutch by Edie Parker—was the real talking point.

The handbag was specially designed by Cox, and featured the LGBTQ rainbow on one side with lettering that reads “Oct 8, Title VII, Supreme Court.” On the other side, the flag of the transgender community is featured, with the hashtag #TRANSISBEAUTIFUL.

The reference to the Supreme Court case draws awareness to a looming trial: on October 8, the Supreme Court will begin hearings to decide if anti-LGBTQ employment discrimination qualifies as sex discrimination. The case will also assess whether LGBTQ workers are protected by the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, an act that “prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin.”

Cox has been a prominent activist for LGBTQ rights over the years, but her Emmys appearance is one of the first times that the actress used fashion to make a political statement. “This is a very important hearing that will affect the future of LGBTQ rights,” the actress’s stylist, Christina Joy Pacelli, told Vogue US. “Laverne took the opportunity to shine a light on its importance with her Emmys fashion.”
