The second season of Dirty John has an entirely new cast and plot

A second season of the Golden Globe-nominated, cult true crime series, , has been confirmed and the plot of the highly-anticipated second installment has been revealed.

The first season, which was based on a true story brought to life in a podcast by the , told the story of an interior decorator who fell in love with a conman nicknamed “Dirty John”. The second will tell the story of American housewife Betty Broderick and her husband Dan, which was first told by the  in the early ’90s. 

According to , the next installment, titled , will see Amanda Peet play Betty, “the perfect Southern California blonde wife and mother.” ’s Christian Slater will star alongside Peet as Dan, in a story that is set to span a total of three decades, from the 1960s to the late 1980s.

According to the second season’s press release, obtained by , high-profile lawyer Dan hires Linda, “a bright, beautiful young woman without baggage with whom he can happily forget the struggles of his past.” A move that ultimately leads to Betty’s downfall. 

“Betty’s attempts to fight back and enraged refusals to accept reality only serve to isolate and destabilize her until she loses her very identity,” reads the release. “And Dan’s cold confidence blinds him to the bear he has created, and won’t stop poking…until it’s too late.”

If you’re familiar with Broderick’s story, or the books, TV show episodes and interviews that have since dissected her narrative, then it’s likely you’re familiar with what will be the storyline of the upcoming season, which is currently in production.

“The first season of  was a story of twisted love and coercive control — and both these insidious elements are also present in and integral to the story of Betty Broderick, whom I have wanted to write about since I became a writer,” creator Alexandra Cunningham said in a statement, per . “I can’t wait to see Amanda and Christian bring it to life.”
