What does it look like when four Queens hang out? The royal family’s annual event, Garter Day, gave us an insight overnight, and the answer is, it’s incredibly chic.
The King and Queen of Spain, as well as the King and Queen of the Netherlands, joined senior members of the British royal family overnight at an event called Garter Day. The day is a centuries-old event celebrating the Order of the Garter Ceremony, where new appointments into the Order are made. This year, members of the royal family gathered in Windsor for the ceremony, which involves a members being invested into the Order as recognition for their public service.
During the day, two of our favourite royals, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall, were seen hanging out with two very special guests – Queen Letizia of Spain and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. The gathering of this group of royals was especially noteworthy considering both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall will one day be Queens themselves – since both their husbands are heir apparent, they’ll both one day be crowned Queen Consort (the term used to describe the partner of a reigning monarch).

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a new coat dress for the occasion, choosing a black and white Catherine Walker look for the event. Together, the four incredibly stylish women were seen chatting outside Windsor Castle and sharing a laugh together.
Both Queen Letizia of Spain and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands were invited to watch on as their husbands, King Felipe VI of Spain and King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands respectively, were invested as Supernumerary Knights of the Garter.
Queen Elizabeth II, who is Sovereign of the Garter, was pictured in her traditional grand velvet robes for the event, which as per the royal family’s website, includes “glistening insignia and plumed hats.” The website also says it is “one of the most traditional ceremonies in The Queen’s calendar.”
The Sussexes weren’t in attendance at the event, given the Duchess of Sussex is on maternity leave and Prince Harry is not yet a Knight of the Order of the Garter. Prince William was invested in 2008, likely given his closer proximity in the lineage to the throne. It is expected that Prince Harry will be invested once his father, Prince Charles, becomes King, so we can expect to see the Sussexes at this special royal event one day!
